Abaan bests The Hero Next Door is thrilling renewal of Carolina Cup.
Only four horses went postward in the $75,000 novice stakes at Springdale Race Course in Camden, S.C., but the race itself was anything but ho-hum. Michael Smith's The Hero Next Door, under Jamie Bargary, snatched the lead from the outset and still had it at the final fence as Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Daignault Thoroughbreds' Abaan shadowed then collared his tough foe, angling to the far outside in deep stretch and drawing off by 2 1/4 lengths under Bernie Dalton.
Abaan's victory was popular one as Dalton and his wife, Abaan's trainer, Kate Dalton, are locals and the community celebrated with the couple and their connections. Another local runner, Arch Kingsley's L'Imperator, last year's novice champ, made a belated run to finish close behind The Hero Next Door.
